U.S. Department of Education Announces Missouri’s 2023 Green Ribbon Schools Honoree

Patrick Henry Downtown Academy Elementary School in the St. Louis Public School District received recognition from the U.S. Department of Education today as a 2023 Green Ribbon School thanks to its innovative efforts to reduce environmental impact and utility costs, improve health and wellness, and ensure sustainability education.

“This is a distinguished national list and I’m very proud of the staff at Patrick Henry for all of their hard work,” said Commissioner of Education Margie Vandeven. “I’m impressed by the innovative ideas that support the health and wellness of their students and staff and to ensure environmentally-friendly practices are incorporated into their school culture.”

Patrick Henry transformed its 116-year-old historic building into a haven of sustainable efforts with 100 percent LED lighting and a walking-only field trip policy, among other initiatives. Patrick Henry embraces the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child model of addressing health in schools through its garden program, which provides students and families with access to fresh produce. Every school year, Patrick Henry encourages students, families, and staff to better themselves through improving the environment around them.

Across the country, 26 schools, 11 districts, and four postsecondary institutions were honored as 2023 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools.
