Missouri NAACP Supports Common Core

04/10/14

The NAACP Missouri State Conference has issued a resolution in support of the Common Core State Standards. The resolution also states support for the Department’s efforts to raise standards in Missouri and provide assistance to school districts and teachers as they implement these standards.

The NAACP resolution pledges to work in collaboration with parents, the Department, and other education and business organizations in the state to show unified support for the Common Core across generations, political lines and school districts.

“The Department welcomes the support of the NAACP as Missouri continues to implement higher standards and works toward giving all children access to quality education across the state,” said Commissioner of Education Chris Nicastro.

The resolution further states that the Missouri NAACP supports quality early childhood education to provide all Missouri children with the opportunity to compete effectively in the emerging global economy.

The resolution supports two of the goals of Missouri’s Top 10 By 20 initiative, which is aimed at placing Missouri among the top 10 states in education by 2020:

  • All Missouri students will graduate college and career ready.
  • All Missouri children will enter kindergarten prepared to be successful in school.
