DESE announces Fort Osage R‑I School District’s Sarah Steffens as the 2027 Missouri Teacher of the Year.

Steffens, K–4 Reading Interventionist, was selected for her unwavering commitment to student literacy, innovative instructional leadership, and her impact on early learners across her school community.

“Sarah Steffens exemplifies the dedication and skill we see in outstanding Missouri educators,” said Dr. Stacey Preis, Interim Commissioner of Education. “Steffens is celebrated for empowering student voice, strengthening literacy growth and building strong, collaborative relationships with colleagues and families. Her work reflects the best of our schools and the deep impact teachers have on students across the state.”

Steffens, who serves students at Elm Grove Elementary, was originally announced as one of seven statewide finalists for the 2027 honor.

Her selection follows a process that began with 35 Regional Teachers of the Year and moved through 16 statewide semifinalists from districts across Missouri. A committee of former Missouri Teachers of the Year and representatives from education organizations interviewed finalists in early September before naming Steffens the 2027 Missouri Teacher of the Year.

As Missouri’s 2027 Teacher of the Year, Steffens will go on to represent the state in the National Teacher of the Year competition and will serve as Missouri’s ambassador for educational excellence throughout the coming year.
