State Board Grants Full Accreditation for Kansas City Public Schools

Today, the State Board of Education voted to classify Kansas City Public Schools (KCPS) as fully accredited, effective immediately. The vote followed a presentation by staff at the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) outlining the district’s student growth in academics as well as improved instructional systems and processes and stability in district leadership.

State Board of Education Establishes Priorities for the 2022 Legislative Session

At today’s State Board of Education (Board) meeting, board members voted to establish the group’s priorities for the upcoming legislative session. The priorities were developed by the board’s three-member Legislative Priorities Subcommittee and presented to the entire board today for adoption. The legislative priorities center on the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education’s (DESE’s) priority areas and mission, which are:

State Board of Education Votes to Begin a Transition Back to Local Governance in Normandy and Riverview Gardens

At today’s State Board of Education (Board) meeting, board members accepted the recommendation made by Commissioner of Education Margie Vandeven to begin a gradual transition back to local governance for the Normandy Schools Collaborative (NSC) and the Riverview Gardens School District. This means voters will have the opportunity in the April 2022 election to select two new members to both the NSC Joint Executive Governing Board (JEGB) and the Riverview Gardens Special Administrative Board (SAB).

State of Missouri Offers Credit and Identity Theft Monitoring to Educators after Data Vulnerability Incident

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), in conjunction with Missouri's Office of Administration Information Technology Services Division (OA-ITSD), will begin to send letters in the coming days to certificated educators across the state whose personally identifiable information (PII) may have been compromised during a recent data vulnerability incident. The state is unaware of any misuse of individual information or if information was accessed inappropriately outside of an isolated incident.

DESE Launches Statewide Partnership to Tackle Missouri’s Teacher Shortages

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) announced today the launch of a new digitally-powered recruitment platform — TeachMO.org — to identify and cultivate the next generation of teachers throughout the state. This is a collaborative effort, supported by TEACH, a national nonprofit organization, as well as schools, universities, and education organizations across the state.

Governor Parson Appoints Newest Member of the State Board of Education

Today, Governor Michael L. Parson appointed Kerry Casey (Chesterfield) to the State Board of Education. Casey currently serves as Vice President of Exegy, a global leader in financial market data, trading platforms, and predictive signals, where she is responsible for Global Sales Operations and Enablement. In addition to her role with Exegy, Casey is a founding board member of the KIPP Charter School in St. Louis and continues to serve on the board of directors.

State Board of Education Approves an Emergency Amendment for the Route to Substitute Certification

The State Board of Education (State Board) authorized the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) to request the Secretary of State and Joint Committee on Administrative Rules allow the new amendment to the certification process for substitute teachers (5 CSR 20-400.220) to take effect in early November instead of December 31, 2021.
