Celebrating 50 Years of IDEA
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. This landmark legislation has transformed the landscape of education and support for children with disabilities across the United States. The grant programs authorized under the IDEA provide federal funding for early intervention and special education services for children with disabilities birth through 21 years old.
In Missouri, the IDEA early intervention program is known as First Steps and plays a crucial role in this mission. First Steps provides early intervention services to infants and toddlers, from birth to 3 years old, with developmental delays or disabilities. Through a comprehensive approach that includes personalized services and resources, First Steps supports and empowers families and improves developmental outcomes for young children.
The IDEA special education preschool program for children ages 3 through 5 is known as Early Childhood Special Education. Children who meet eligibility criteria may receive Early Childhood Special Education services in various settings, such as a pre-kindergarten classroom, in the home, or community settings, such as Head Start and preschool.
As we commemorate this significant anniversary, we reflect on the progress made over the past five decades and the ongoing commitment to ensuring that every child, regardless of their abilities, has access to the supports they need to thrive. Together, we can continue to advocate for inclusive practices and celebrate the achievements of children and families across our state.
