Riverview Gardens Accreditation Recommendation Postponed Until Fall
The State Board of Education today took no action on Riverview Gardens School District’s request for reclassification as provisionally accredited. The Board acknowledged the district’s significant improvement efforts. A review of the district provided evidence of improved student learning, curriculum implementation, and teacher evaluation methods.
“The students, teachers and leaders in Riverview Gardens have worked very hard to improve their schools and help students succeed,” said Commissioner of Education Margie Vandeven. “The Board’s decision is not a reflection on their tremendous progress in the last few years.”
Riverview Gardens had requested the reclassification in October 2015. In December 2015, the State Board directed the Department to set goals for Riverview Gardens as part of a framework for a summer classification consideration. The summer consideration was due to anticipated delays in the 2016 Annual Performance Report (APR) calculations for school districts.
The Department set high performance expectations for Riverview Gardens in order to provide a high degree of confidence in an off-cycle recommendation. The goals included specific performance targets in math, reading, science, social studies, and college and career readiness. The district met goals in three of the target areas: math, reading, and college and career readiness. Riverview Garden’s classification will receive its review in the fall.
