State Education Board VP to be inducted to Missouri Sports Hall of Fame
State Board of Education Vice President Peter Herschend, 74, of Branson will be inducted to the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame this weekend for his accomplishments as a cyclist and fundraiser on behalf of the Multiple Sclerosis Society. He will be among the 15 individuals, two teams, and special award recipients who will be recognized for their notable and diverse accomplishments in Missouri athletics. Approximately 2,000 people will attend the 2010 Enshrinement Ceremony to be held January 31 at the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in Springfield.
Since 1990, Herschend has participated annually in the local MS 150 Bike Tour, generating a record $1,265,000 for the National MS Society during that time. For several years, he was the event’s top individual fundraiser in the nation. Herschend is the first person in MS Society history to raise $1 million in a participant event and holds the record as the national MS society’s highest cumulative fundraiser.
Appointed in 1991, Herschend is the longest-serving member on the State Board of Education. Prior to his appointment, he served 12 years on the Branson Board of Education. He is co-owner and co-founder of Herschend Family entertainment Corporation (formerly Silver Dollar City, Inc.). (Jan. 28)
