Counseling (Guidance) System of Support Overview

Counseling System Of Support

The Missouri Counseling System of Support (CSOS) is a collaborative state-wide initiative designed to support school counselors in fully implementing a School Counseling Program that is effective, sustainable, accountable and meets MSIP5 School Counseling Standards.

Developed with the cooperation of the School Counseling Section of The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), College and Career Consultants (CCCs), Missouri School Counselor Association (MSCA), and counselor educators, this system is designed to provide quality professional development addressing current and relevant topics along with technical assistance.

Annual fall and Spring workshops for all Missouri K-12 school counselors are held at area career centers to create a collaborative state-wide system for learning and growth. All meetings follow the same agenda, are facilitated by a College and Career Consultant (CCC) and are designed to enhance school counselor knowledge, skills and practice.

Fall 2016 Counseling System of Support Workshop

"A Bridge to College & Career Readiness"

K-12 Career Development

Overview:  Preparing college and career ready students is a K-12 challenge that continues to draw attention from both educators and employers.  Issues that consistently negatively impact performance include lack of student; motivation and/or engagement, employability skills, and understanding of the connection between education and the world of work.

The majority of the time will be devoted to experiencing the world of work through employer panels and/or tours of local career centers or business/industry. Information and insights will be relevant to all K-12 counselors as the Individual Student Planning process defines the learning and experiences students need to develop "career maturity" over time, including life and career competencies and employability skills.  Making the connection between school and work is a critical goal that benefits educators, employers and ultimately students. This professional development experience will position school counselors to provide leadership in this process.

All K-12 school counselors will benefit as elementary awareness, middle school exploration, and high school planning and decision making are addressed.

Outcomes: As a result of this experience, participants will be able to:

  • Gain insights from employers that will benefit student understanding and decisions
  • Use new learning to better support career awareness and development through the K-12 Individual Student Planning Process
  • Develop specific talking points and action plans for their program and school

Targeted Audience: K-12 school counselors and counselor educators

Support: Contact your regional College and Career Consultants or Chrissy Bashore at [email protected] or 573-751-6875
