The State Board of Education approved the updated Missouri Learning Standards on April 19, 2016, based on the standards created by work groups of Missouri parents and educators. The revised standards were developed by Missourians for Missouri students. These expectations are challenging, yet attainable, for students in our state. The standards further define our high expectations for what children should know and be able to do in each course and grade level, helping ensure they graduate prepared for college, career and life.

Background Information

On July 14, 2014, House Bill 1490 was signed into law by Missouri Governor Jay Nixon. HB 1490 provided a structure and timeline for review of the English language arts, social studies, science and mathematics expectations that are part of the Missouri Learning Standards. The law called for work groups of parents and educators to update standards in these content areas by Oct. 1, 2015, and implemented beginning in the 2016-2017 school year.

To ensure complete transparency and provide an accurate record of discussion and comments, the Department created a website to share information regarding all work group sessions and other pertinent facts and details. All work group sessions were video-recorded and can be viewed at the bottom of this page.

Work Group Proposals

The work groups in English language arts, mathematics, science and social studies met throughout last year to develop learning standards in each content area. The proposed standards prepared by the work groups were due on Oct. 1, 2015, and they were presented to the State Board during a public hearing on Oct. 26, 2015.

Work group members were appointed by various stakeholders in the state as defined in the law. Members included active classroom teachers and parents of school-age children. They represented each geographic region of Missouri.

For more information on the timeline of the review and implementation of the standards, please see the HB1490 timeline page.
