Career Pathways for the Teaching Profession

Career Pathways for the Teaching Profession is a career education program originating in Family Consumer Sciences and Human Services.   

Program Requirements:

  1.  Career Education Program Approval is required before implementing the program.  http://dese.mo.gov/sites/default/files/dac_forms/MO5002457.pdf
  2. Attendance at the program implementation educator training is required.
    1. Program implementation training will be held during the fall semester.  This training is required before career education program approval for the Career Pathways for the Teaching Professions program is completed.
    2. Additional training opportunities will be offered periodically.
  3. Upon completion of program implementation training and program approval educators may subscribe to a listserv restricted to approved program participants.  This form will allow educators to share resources, ask question, and share solutions.
  4. Participation in a Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) such as FCCLA http://dese.mo.gov/college-career-readiness/career-education/family-consumer-sciences-human-services-education/fccla-0 or Educators Rising http://dese.mo.gov/sites/default/files/dac_forms/MO5002457.pdf  is required.

When program requirements are met students can complete an assessment from the American Association of Family Consumer Sciences leading to a Technical Skills Attainment (TSA) for Perkins compliance or an Industry Recognized Credential (IRC) for MSIP points.  Qualifying educators may seek approval from post-secondary institutions to teach the courses for Dual Credit.  Dual Credit is awarded through several universities in the state.

The program consisting of two courses is described below.

1st Course − Career Pathways for the Teaching Profession

This class is designed for students who are considering the elementary or secondary teaching profession or corporate educator. The course focuses on the general theory and practice of learning and teaching. The first course includes the basic principles of educational psychology, the art of teaching, the planning and administration of educational activities, school safety and health issues, and the social foundations of education.

2nd Course − Practicum in Teaching Pathway

This course provides students with a seamless pathway to study the profession through experiencing the classroom as an intern. Each student is assigned to a district school within the high school attendance boundaries. Pre-Professional Educator Cadet practicum students complete reflection journals, prepare and present a lesson(s) and work closely with students of the assigned supervising teacher. Students will demonstrate good moral character, good work habits, responsibility, punctuality and organizational skills.

These program components may be offered in optional scenarios based on district scheduling, policies, and availability of mentor teachers in the district.  Options are discussed during the educator implementation training.
