eLearning for Educators


 e-Learning for Educators Program

Missouri has been a member of a ten-state, five-year, U.S. Dept. of Education Ready to Teach grant since October 2005. The purpose of the grant project is to develop a sustainable, systemic delivery of online professional development for teachers, particularly those in high-need schools. 

Grant partners include state education agencies and pubic broadcast stations in Alabama, Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. Boston College and the Education Development Center (EDC) EdTech Leaders® Online Program (ETLO) staff have provided technical assistance, consultation, and evaluation. Alabama Public Television is administering the grant.

Major activities of the grant include: training instructors/course facilitators and launch existing e-learning course through ETLO, providing 25 courses for up to 500 teachers per state (year 1); training additional instructors, begin training online course developers, and expanding the number of courses offered in each state (year 2); adding instructors and new courses developed by state teams to address specific state needs (years 3-5);  and conducting ongoing evaluation and research to validate the program premise that online professional development can impact student achievement (years 2-5).

e-Learning for Educators: Missouri

Missouri partners include Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, KETC/Channel 9 St. Louis Public Television, Missouri State University, and University of Missouri. Christine Terry is Missouri’s state director, with project coordination and website resources residing with the eMINTS National Center.

The e-Learning for Educators: Missouri program has served more than 2,100 Missouri K-12 teachers, to-date, who have participated in over 80 different courses, with an 89% completion rate. Participants report that the e-Learning for Educators: Missouri workshop courses are of high-quality and effective, providing participants with knowledge and skills useful in their teaching and addressing student needs.

In general, courses are facilitated by certificated Missouri educators trained as online instructors, run 7 to 8 weeks in length, cost $125 per person per course, and have graduate credit available (for an additional fee) from UMKC, UMSL and Missouri State University. Discounts are available for participant teams from the same district/school, and scholarships may be made available in special cases.

The program offers courses available through ETLO, courses developed by the grant consortium, and courses developed specifically for Missouri educators.

  • Grant consortium courses, developed for the research program, include a series of three courses for grade 4 and grade 7 English/language arts and grade 5 and grade 8 math.
  • Missouri-specific courses, developed by Missouri educators, include (not limited) to: differentiated instruction, using backward design for lesson planning, classroom assessment enhanced with technology, reading comprehension in the elementary classroom, inquiry in the science classroom (with extensive electronic media provided by KETC), personal finance (a free course with grant assistance from Bank of America), getting started in the school library profession, Web 2.0 tools, and information and communications technology literacy skills (under development).
  • In addition, e-Learning has provided specialized assistance for the DESE First Steps, Administrator Mentoring, and Comprehensive Guidance programs.

Other fee-for-services available (see website for details) include: custom/closed courses, course facilitator training, content development, course building in Moodle, course hosting, course licensing, and on-site consultation.
