Subject: "Tech It Up A Notch" Technology Day at Missouri School for the Blind (Grades 6-12)

Intended Audience: Missouri students with visual impairments (grades 6-12), accompanied by their teachers (TVI/O&M instructors) and/or parents/guardians  

Date: October 8, 2013

Registration is now open for Missouri School for the Blind's "Tech It Up a Notch" Technology Day on November 14, 2013.  This event is for Missouri students who are blind and visually impaired in grades 6-12.  The day-long event will be held on the MSB campus from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. with an optional Early Bird Activity at 8:30 a.m.  "Tech It Up a Notch" will provide students hands-on access to software and devices designed or adapted specifically for the blind and visually impaired in a supported setting. 

Optional Early Bird Activity (8:30 a.m.)

I. Welcome and Opening Session (9:30 a.m.) will provide a brief introduction to a variety of innovative assistive and adaptive technology devices and software. 

II. Round II will have options designed to include students of varied ability level.  Students will be given the opportunity to choose from the following: 

Explore devices and software in a non-competitive environment for DEMONSTRATION rounds.  Students earn points for participating in these activities.

OR . Demonstrate their skills in COMPETITIVE rounds.  Students earn points by demonstrating mastery of the selected device with appropriate speed and accuracy.  In these rounds, students can accrue additional points by completing more than the required tasks. 

III. The final round will be an interactive, game show-style competition using the Zeecraft buzzer system.  Students will have the opportunity to earn points by responding to questions about the devices demonstrated at the "Tech It Up A Notch" event.

Prizes will be awarded to Overall Competition Winners in the Middle School (6-8) and High School Divisions (9-12).  A wide array of prizes will be awarded, including some of the technology showcased during the event.  In addition, all students attending may enter to win door prizes in a drawing to be held during the closing session.  Lunch is included for all students and one adult per student.
