First Steps Listserv

Subject: Deaf/Hard of Hearing/Parent Education

Source: Barbara Garrison, MSD Superintendent

Intended Audience: SPOE Directors, Service Coordinators, First Steps providers

Date: January 13, 2010

Children ages 0-5 who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing and their families are eligible for outreach services through the Missouri School for the Deaf's Resource Center.  Trained parent advisors visit the child's home on a weekly basis to instruct parents on a variety of issues that are unique to children who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing.  This instruction is based on a nationally recognized curriculum (SKI*HI) and includes topics such as language and communication development, the use of hearing aids, cochlear implants, etc.  First Steps Service Coordinators are encouraged to contact MSD if they know of any families who may benefit from the program.

For additional information, please contact Robyn Fleming, Lead Parent Advisor for the Missouri School for the Deaf, at (573) 645-6647; e-mail:  moparlf@hotmail.com; or the Resource Center on Deafness at rcd@msd.dese.mo.gov
