Subject: Multiple Professional Development Opportunities on Working with Visually Impaired Students

On March 7, 2011, the Blind Skills Specialist at the Heart of Missouri RPDC will be conducting a workshop entitled "Social Skills for the Visually Impaired."  This workshop will assist teachers who work with visually impaired students to design social skills intervention strategies and to assist students in development of social skills.  Specific activities will be presented during the workshop.  Lunch, snacks, and parking hangtags will be provided.  The workshop will be held at the University of Missouri-Columbia Campus, 2 London Hall Room #7, Columbia, MO from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  The cost is $75.  This workshop qualifies for 6 hours Professional Development.

On March 14, 2011, the Heart of Missouri RPDC Blind Skills Specialist will conduct a workshop that focuses on the complex and varied effects on learning and behavior that result when a child with an autism spectrum disorder is also visually impaired.  The workshop will also look at how autism spectrum disorders interact with visual impairments.  Additional topics covered include assessment, instructional materials, social skills, and teaching strategies.  Lunch, snacks, and parking hangtags will be provided.  The workshop will be held at the University of Missouri-Columbia Campus, 2 London Hall Room #7, Columbia, MO from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  The cost is $75.  This workshop qualifies for 6 hours Professional Development.

On March 21, 2011, the Heart of Missouri RPDC Blind Skills Specialist will conduct an all day "hands-on" training on JAWS for Windows Screen Reader software.  Lunch, snacks, and parking hangtags will be provided.  The workshop will be held at the University of Missouri-Columbia Campus, 2 London Hall Room #7, Columbia, MO from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  The workshop is free.  Enrollment is limited to 15 participants.  This workshop qualifies for 6 hours of Professional Development.

On March 22, 2011, the Heart of Missouri RPDC Blind Skills Specialist will conduct a "hands-on" training focusing on PACMATE, a Braille notetaker.  Participants are encouraged to bring a PACMATE with them to the workshop.  Lunch, snacks, and parking hangtags will be provided.  The workshop will be held at the University of Missouri-Columbia Campus, 2 London Hall Room #7, Columbia, MO from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  The workshop is free.  Enrollment is limited.  This workshop qualifies for 6 hours of Professional Development.
