The Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) has advised the Missouri Office of Special Education that the Prior Written Notice provided to parents for their consent to initiate services in special education must include the category of disability under which the child qualified for those services. We believe this is common practice for most Missouri agencies when providing such notice. However, if your agency does not include the disability category in the Prior Written Notice for initial consent for services/placement, you will want to inform all responsible staff as soon as possible that this must be standard procedure when providing a notice and is to be implemented immediately.
