DESE has arranged for a FREE workshop on Visual Phonics. The workshop will be held on the campus of Missouri School for the Deaf in Fulton, MO, on Friday, June 12, and Saturday, June 13, 2009, in the Farquhar Library located in the Wheeler School building next to the Administration Building.
Participation will be limited to 40 participants; however, we are arranging additional workshops in other locations next school year.
See the Sound/Visual Phonics is a multi-sensory approach to teaching reading, language, and writing skills. It is a system which associates each sound in our language with a hand signal and graphic symbol. See the Sound/Visual Phonics links speech sounds to our other senses in a natural progression. The mouth movements for each phoneme are then mirrored in a hand gesture. The gesture in turn is reflected in a written symbol. See the Sound/Visual Phonics fixes the movements, which triggers better memory. It has been used successfully with hearing impaired students as well as students with learning disabilities, autism, speech and language problems, literacy, E.S.L., and E.M.H.
Regular education teachers pre-K through grade 3 have found the program to be beneficial in teaching phonics skills.
Registration will be through My Learning Plan at http://www.dese.mo.gov/divspeced/EffectivePractices/training.html and is limited to 40 participants. The workshop will start at 8:00 a.m. each day and conclude by 4:30 p.m. Lodging for the workshop will be the responsibility of the participants. Lodging is available in Fulton, Kingdom City, Columbia, or Jefferson City. Meals will be provided both days. Directions to the Missouri School for the Deaf and the designated parking area on campus can be accessed at the following link http://dese.mo.gov/divspeced/EffectivePractices/MapMSD.pdf.
