Director of Special Education for the 2006-2007 school year

This message is to announce plans of the Division of Special Education to
again conduct a New Director of Special Education Institute this summer. The
institute is scheduled to be held August 8-10, 2006, in Jefferson City. This
institute will focus on core activities that new directors must complete
during their initial months of employment. Topics to be covered are:
Legal Issues in Special Education, Special Education Compliance, Funds
Management, Data Collection and Reporting, Effective Instructional
Practices, Special Education State Performance Plan, Special Education
Program Evaluation, General Supervision/Monitoring of Special Education
Programs, and Program Improvement Planning.
This institute is specifically designed for individuals who will be assuming
the position of Director of Special Education for the first time during the
2006-2007 school year. Attendance at this institute is limited to 75
individuals and enrollment will be done on a first-come, first-serve basis.
This workshop is not intended for individuals who are new to a district, but
have previously served as a Director of Special Education elsewhere or for
individuals who have served for more than one year as a Director of Special
Education in any district within the state of Missouri.
Districts anticipating hiring a new Director of Special Education or
individuals anticipating assuming this role for the first time during the
next school year are encouraged to put the dates for this institute on their
calendar. Additional information and registration instructions will be
disseminated via SELS and posted on the Division website in the
next few weeks.
