This message is to announce plans of the Division of Special Education to
conduct a New Director of Special Education Institute this summer.
The institute is scheduled to be held July 30, 31, and August 1, 2007, in
Jefferson City. This institute will focus on core activities new directors
must complete during their initial months of employment that will assist
them in the management of special education procedures and practices that
promote positive outcomes for students with disabilities while ensuring the
rights of students with disabilities and their parents are protected. Topics
to be covered are: Legal Issues in Special Education, Special Education
Compliance, Funds Management, Data Collection and Reporting, Effective
Instructional Practices, Special Education State Performance Plan, Special
Education Program Evaluation, General Supervision/Monitoring of Special
Education Programs, and Program Improvement Planning.
Who should attend this institute?*
*PLEASE NOTE: Due to high demand and limited space availability, individuals
who have attended this training in the past are not eligible to enroll in
this year's institute.
A "new" director is defined as a person who will be assuming the
position/duties of a Director of Special Education for the first time during
the 2007-2008 school year. Districts planning to hire an individual who has
never been a Director of Special Education in any Missouri school district
or an individual who will be assuming such a position during the coming
school year are encouraged to reserve these dates and submit a registration
to the Division of Special Education as soon as possible.
Attendance at this institute is limited to 75 individuals and enrollment
will be done on a first-come, first-serve basis. This workshop is not
intended for individuals who are new to a district, but have previously
served as a Director of Special Education elsewhere or for individuals who
have served for more than one year as a Director of Special Education in any
district within the state of Missouri.
