Subject:  School Psychologist Intern Project

Source:  Betty McCartney, Supervisor, Effective Practices

Intended Audience:  Superintendents, Special Education Administrators, Principals

Date:  March 10, 2005

The Division of Special Education will offer funding incentives to employ school psychologist interns in public agencies during the 2005-06 school year.  School psychologists can help reduce needless referrals and improve students’ academic performance via development and implementation of academic and behavior interventions.  They can also provide research-based pre-referral interventions and document student response to interventions to meet recent revisions in federal special education laws.

The goals of this project are: to assist districts in utilizing school psychologists to support all students, to provide districts with qualified personnel to assist in assessment and data interpretation under NCLB and IDEA, and to provide qualified individuals to assist in developing positive behavior systems.  The deadline for locating an intern and submitting requests for funding is May 1, 2005.
