Subject: Updated Missouri Parents ACT (MPACT) Parent Mentor Volunteer List

Source: Megan Thompson, Supervisor, Effective Practices

Intended Audience: Special Education Directors and staff responsible for IEP team meetings

Date: January 20, 2005

The listing of current MPACT Parent Mentors is being provided to inform school districts of trained mentors who are available to offer support and guidance to parents of children with disabilities throughout the IEP process.  To view this list of current MPACT Parent Mentors, go to http://www.ptimpact.com/highres/main/mentor_list.htm.

MPACT Parent Mentors are volunteers who receive 18 hours of initial training, ongoing monthly training, and technical assistance from MPACT staff with regard to special education law, the IEP process, conflict resolution, and effective advocacy.  Their goal is to help parents build a collaborative partnership with the school district so that their child may receive an appropriate education.  For more information about MPACT or if you have questions regarding the status of a mentor, please contact MPACT at the following address:  Missouri Parents ACT, One West Armour Boulevard, Suite 302, Kansas City, Missouri 64111.  You may also contact them by phone at (800) 743-7634 or by e-mail at mpact@ptimpact.com.  The website for MPACT is http://www.ptimpact.org.

If your school district has had a parent mentor in attendance at an IEP meeting, please take a moment to complete a brief online survey located at http://www.ptimpact.com/highres/forms/survey_educator.htm if you have not already done so.  A separate survey should be completed for each mentor who has provided services to parents in your district.  These surveys assist MPACT and the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education with identifying and addressing areas of success and improvement with the Parent Mentor Program.
