Refugee Children School Impact

The Missouri Department of Social Services in collaboration with the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education requested funds from the US Department of Health and Human Services to make grants to refugee highly populated local educational agencies of Missouri. School projects assist refugees in obtaining the skills needed for economic self-sufficiency and language proficiency. The focus also includes various social, health and educational services. Awards for this program are not only based on the high numbers, but also on the adequate documentation of needs and the strength of the program’s proposed services.

Refugee is defined by the Office of Refugee Resettlement as:

“… any person who is outside any country of such person’s nationality or, in the case of a person having no nationality, is outside any country in which such person last habitually resided, and who is unable or unwilling to return to, and is unable or unwilling to avail himself or herself of the protection of, that country because of persecution or a well-founded fear of persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion.”
