Missouri Vocational Rehabilitation Recognized as a High-Performing State Agency

The Rehabilitation Services Administration at the U.S. Department of Education has recognized Missouri Vocational Rehabilitation (VR) for its high performance on substantial gainful activity case closures for Social Security disability insurance customers.

Missouri VR is one of eight state vocational rehabilitation agencies across the country chosen to participate in a case study under the Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) Project because of its successful work with Social Security disability insurance employment outcomes.

"Missouri Vocational Rehabilitation's mission is to put people first and to ensure that we provide the highest quality, employment-oriented services to Missourians with disabilities," said Jeanne Loyd, assistant commissioner for the Office of Adult Learning and Rehabilitation Services at the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. "We are proud of the work we are doing. Participation in the SGA Project will allow us to continue the betterment of these services and to share our own best practices."

The Institute for Community Inclusion at the University of Massachusetts Boston and Mathematica Policy Research, Inc. are conducting the case study research on state VR agency practices that effectively assist Social Security disability insurance recipients in returning to work with earnings above substantial gainful activity. The goal is to develop technical assistance for VR agencies and create an employment-service delivery model for Social Security disability insurance customers.

Joe Marrone, senior program manager for public policy at the Institute for Community Inclusion, stated, “The information that we obtained from the Missouri case study will provide valuable insights for the SGA project.”

The SGA Project is funded by a five-year grant through the Rehabilitation Services Administration. For more information on the project, visit www.vr-ssdi.org.
