Gov. Jay Nixon today announced the appointment of Charlie W. Shields, St. Joseph, to the State Board of Education.
Shields is Chief Operating Officer of Truman Medical Center (TMC) Lakewood. He joined TMC in July 2010, after serving 20 years in the Missouri General Assembly. Previously he was a member of the Missouri House of Representatives from 1991 until 2002.
"We are pleased to welcome Mr. Shields as a member of the Missouri State Board of Education," said Commissioner of Education Chris L. Nicastro. "Mr. Shields brings a valued perspective to our diverse group of board members and we're looking forward to having him on our team. His leadership record and support for public education will help us achieve our goal of becoming one of the top 10 performing states in education by the year 2020."
Shields' appointment is subject to confirmation by the Missouri Senate, but he will be able to begin serving on the board immediately. The Governor has appointed him for a term ending July 1, 2020.
