Missouri State Board of Education President Peter F. Herschend will receive the 2012 Distinguished Service Award by the National Association of State Boards of Education (NASBE) as part of its annual conference Friday in Chicago, Ill. The Distinguished Service Award is given annually to state board of education members in recognition of outstanding service to public education.

"There is no one more deserving of this award than Peter," said Missouri Commissioner of Education Chris L. Nicastro. "Peter has been a strong advocate for and friend of public education for over three decades. This recognition speaks volumes to his dedication and leadership in ensuring all kids are afforded the education they deserve. We are so very fortunate to have him here in Missouri."

Peter F. Herschend, Branson, was first appointed to the Missouri State Board of Education in December 1991. He was re-appointed for new terms in November 1999 and October 2007. He is founder and co-owner of Herschend Family Entertainment Corp., which owns Silver Dollar City and other entertainment properties. Before his appointment to the State Board, Herschend served 12 years on the Branson Board of Education.

“At this pivotal time in public education, state boards are the lynchpin to successful education reform policy development and implementation,” said NASBE Executive Director Jim Kohlmoos. “Peter Herschend’s service on the Missouri State Board of Education provides his board with a unique perspective on the past, present and future of education there. Peter earned the NASBE Distinguished Service Award for the work he has performed in the last 20 years, but I know his leadership in Missouri will be valued for years to come.”

Two other state board members were also selected as 2012 Distinguished Service Award recipients:  Elizabeth Bauer (Mich.) and Steven Pound (Maine).
