Preliminary School Performance Reports Issued
State education officials released preliminary performance reports today for Missouri’s 522 school districts and 37 charter schools.
For more than a decade, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has issued Annual Performance Reports (APRs), which provide broad, high-level snapshots of performance.
The reports contain five years of statistics for each school district, including data from the past school year. School districts have until Sept. 2 to review and correct 2010-11 data that will be reflected in the final APRs, which will be posted by the Department on Sept. 16.
“Looking at the statewide performance overall, the preliminary data appear to be relatively consistent with last year’s results,” said Margie Vandeven, assistant commissioner of the Office of Quality Schools. “The majority of our school districts continue to meet all or most of the standards, yet all schools recognize the challenge to excel.”
The state is working to adopt new and higher standards that would go into effect in about two years.
While most public schools are meeting current standards, about 5 percent of Missouri’s school districts are struggling to make gains, Vandeven said. The Department continues to work closely with those in need of improvement.
The APR is based on academic-performance standards that are the foundation of the state’s current accreditation program for all school districts. For districts serving grades K-12, 14 standards cover measures such as test scores (ACT, state-required MAP and end-of-course tests), attendance, graduation rates and other academic indicators. The seven standards for K-8 districts include MAP scores, attendance and grade point average.
The public can view the preliminary data for each school district and charter school online by using the Department’s new Missouri Comprehensive Data System.
