Education Commissioner to Hold Town Hall Meeting

Commissioner of Education Chris L. Nicastro announced today she will host a town hall meeting on Tuesday evening about the Kansas City Missouri School District. The purpose, she said, is to gather community feedback about the possible formation of a State Monitoring and Assistance Team.

The town hall meeting will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., Oct. 11 in the auditorium of the Paseo Academy of Performing and Fine Arts, 4747 Flora Ave., Kansas City, Mo. Attendees will be asked to provide feedback about what the team’s role and responsibilities should be and identify the characteristics of the individuals who should be selected to serve. The Commissioner will answer questions from the audience.

This Team, to be appointed by the State Board of Education in December, will work on behalf of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to assist the community, KCMSD school board and district leadership to ensure successful implementation of the plan to improve student performance.

Last month, the State Board of Education took action to reclassify the school district from provisionally accredited to unaccredited effective Jan. 1, 2012. Department leadership is now identifying how best to provide support and monitor progress in the district as it works aggressively to regain accredited status.
