Education Commissioner Supports

Tough Decisions Needed in Kansas City

Commissioner of Education Chris L. Nicastro announced today her strong support for the current efforts by Kansas City school board members and Superintendent John Covington to assure the long-term viability of the school district.  She commended Covington and his team for leading a responsive process which aggressively addresses the district’s severe financial issues.

“It is clear the school board needs to make some difficult decisions,” Nicastro said. “They are doing the right thing in putting together a sound and fiscally responsible plan to assure its students will receive a quality education.”

After years of significant student population decline, the district is now considering major facility and staff reductions in response.

“The community needs to be aware and actively engaged, and it also needs to support the board and the superintendent as they work tirelessly on behalf of their students,” she emphasized.
