State Board of Education Elects Officers

The State Board of Education today elected new officers for the coming academic year, beginning July 1.

David Liechti, St. Joseph, who is currently serving as vice president, was elected president.  A former member of the St. Joseph Board of Education, Mr. Liechti is a self-employed Certified Public Accountant in St. Joseph.  He has been a member of the board since October 2003.

Mr. Liechti will succeed Dr. Russell Thompson, Columbia, who has served the past two years as president.

Peter Herschend, Branson, was elected vice president.  He is founder and co-owner of Herschend Family Entertainment Corp., which owns Silver Dollar City and other entertainment properties.  He has been a member of the State Board of Education since 1991.

The State Board of Education has eight members who serve staggered, eight-year terms.  There is currently one vacancy.  Members are appointed by the governor and confirmed by the senate.  Under the Missouri Constitution, the board has general authority to govern the state’s K-12 public school system.
