Commissioner of Education D. Kent King Dies;
Memorial Fund Established at Rolla School District
Commissioner of Education D. Kent King died yesterday (Jan. 7) at his home in Rolla after battling brain cancer for more than two years. The staff of the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education joins with Dr. King’s friends and colleagues across the nation and throughout Missouri to extend our deepest sympathies to his family.
Dr. Russell Thompson, Columbia, president of the State Board of Education, offered this tribute to Commissioner King:
| “Kent King was an outstanding educator and a dedicated public servant. He was highly regarded throughout the state as a school superintendent in Rolla and as a leader at the state level. He was honest, pragmatic, and he tried to make the state education agency more responsive to the needs of local teachers and school officials. He cared deeply about the welfare and educational opportunities of all Missouri children.” |
Visitation for Dr. King will be Saturday, January 10, 2009, from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church, 803 North Main, Rolla.
The funeral service will be Sunday, January 11, at 2:00 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church.
