Appeal Filed on Missouri Membership in Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium

The Attorney General’s office, on behalf of the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the State Board of Education, filed an appeal to the ruling against the state’s membership in the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC). The SBAC is a group of states working together to create common assessments and to share the cost of creating those tests.

Statement on Normandy Appeal

The Attorney General’s office, on behalf of the Department, filed an appeal on Judge Michael Burton’s ruling in the Massey v. Normandy Schools case to preserve the right to appeal. The appeal gives the State Board of Education time to discuss the Department’s recommendation on Normandy’s accreditation classification. At next week’s board meeting, the Department plans to recommend that the board classify the Normandy Schools Collaborative as unaccredited and that the Joint Executive Governing Board remain in place.

Statement in Reaction to Judgment in Normandy Student Transfer Lawsuit

The ruling on Normandy's accreditation reinforces the importance of the General Assembly’s continued urgency on a legislative solution to student transfers this session. The current transfer law is unsustainable, and it leaves unaccredited districts without the resources needed to improve their performance and educate the majority of students who remain in their home district.

Finalists Chosen for Missouri Commissioner of Education

Following its December meeting, the State Board of Education invited five finalists to interview for Missouri Commissioner of Education. Board members met in executive session on Friday, December 5, and reviewed 12 applications for the position.

"The State Board members are looking for the person who can make Missouri a top 10 state for education by 2020," said Board President Peter Herschend. "We believe we have a strong list of finalists, and we will find the right person to lead us there."
