Early Childhood Assessment Pilot Stakeholder Meeting

On March 30, 2012, the Office of Early and Extended Learning held the Early Childhood Assessment Pilot Stakeholder meeting, with 250 people attending. The purpose of this meeting was to outline the need for an early childhood assessment system, provide information about the pilot, and to get input regarding pilot methods and procedures, including instruments used.

The meeting opened with brief discussion of the reasons for and purposes of the early childhood assessment pilot. Based on earlier work by the Early Childhood Assessment Work Group, four instruments were chosen for possible inclusion in the pilot: Brigance Inventory of Early Development II (Standardized) (IED); Teaching Strategies GOLD; Work Sampling System (WSS); and Desired Results Development Profile (DRDP). Representatives of the four early childhood assessment instruments made 30-minute presentations about their specific assessment.

Following the presentations, stakeholders broke into six groups to discuss their opinions about the instruments and to provide feedback about how the pilot should be run. Members of the Early Childhood Assessment Pilot Steering Committee led the discussion in the breakout groups. Brief reports were provided by facilitators to the entire group; the meeting ended with a discussion of next steps for the pilot, including the webinar on April 13, 2012.

State's youngest learners will still gain from early childhood education efforts
The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education received word in December from the U.S. Departments of Education and Health that it did not receive a $60 million grant to develop a coordinated, statewide early learning system over the next four years.  Although it may take longer without the grant funding, Missouri's work to enhance early childhood programs will continue.  The comprehensive plan developed collaboratively through a partnership of six key agencies is outlined in the grant application below.
