Subject: Districts Awarded Special Education Improvement Grants for the 2011-12 School Year

Source: Dan Gordon, Supervisor, Effective Practices

Intended Audience: Superintendents, Special Education Administrators, Building Administrators and Staff

Date: April 18, 2011

Last fall, the Office of Special Education extended an invitation for public school districts (including public charter schools) to apply for two million dollars in competitive Special Education Improvement Grant funds.  The grant proposals were for professional development in the areas of elementary achievement and postsecondary transition.  The deadline for submission was March 1, 2011.

A total of 169 grant applications were submitted requesting over $3,000,000.  Those applications were scored and ranked by trained reviewers. To date, seventy-six elementary achievement and 49 postsecondary transition grants totaling approximately $2,000,000 have been awarded.  The list of districts awarded Special Education Improvement Grants for the 2011-12 school year can be viewed at

We appreciate the efforts of everyone who worked to submit a grant.  Once final expenditure reports from the 2010-11 school year grants have been submitted, if there are unexpended funds, the Office of Special Education will consider distributing those funds to 2011-12 school year grant applicants.

If you have any questions regarding this year's grant applications, please contact Dan Gordon at 573-751-0185.
