You are invited to attend A Workshop on Assessment of Functional Vision/Learning Media (FVLMA) and Assessment of Functional Hearing on October 21-22, 2009, at the Missouri School for the Blind, St. Louis, MO. Participants may attend either or both sessions of this workshop. There is a $25 cost for the Functional Vision Assessment and Learning Media Assessment Workshop (October 21 and ½ day (a.m.) October 22, 2009). There is no charge to attend the ½ day (p.m.) October 22, 2009, Assessment of Functional Hearing Workshop.
FVLMA is an assessment tool that helps practitioners gather, store, track, and analyze information regarding students' functional vision and appropriate learning media. Functional Vision and Learning Media Assessment, written by Rebecca Burnett, Ed.D., and LaRhea Sanford, Ed.D., has been revised and is now an APH Product, the FVLMA Kit. The 1½ day, FVLMA workshop will be conducted by the product author, Dr. LaRhea Sanford, who captivates her audiences while describing and demonstrating the functional vision assessment materials. Workshop participants will work in pairs and small groups to complete sample tasks and practice assessments. FVLMA kits will be available for audience members to use during the workshop.
The half-day Assessment of Functional Hearing Workshop will identify the difference between formal audiological hearing tests and functional, or informal, hearings tests and describe how information from these assessments can be shared to meet the needs of a student. Jim Durkel, CCC-SPL/A, TVI, is an outreach teacher at Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired (TSBVI). He started his professional life as a speech-language pathologist and audiologist. He remains very interested in how all students with vision loss use their hearing and listening skills.
More details will be sent in August. Registration for this course will begin in September 2009. Yvonne Ali (yali@msb.k12.mo.us) and Susan Bonner (sbonner@msb.k12.mo.us) are the Conference Coordinators.
