It’s a mystery!  How did B and D in the Morse Code Box on page 177 of the Get a Clue @ Your Library, 2007 summer manual get switched?  We do not know, but this is a heads up for all the savvy librarians and young detectives that will be solving mysteries this summer.  Perhaps this was an unintentional mystery for us to solve and have the opportunity to use all those code and cipher books in the 000’s or search “www” style for Morse Code information.  This is your clue:  page 177; B; D; reversed.

2. Spanish course offered for English speakers

The J. Otto Lottes Health Sciences Library will host a free workshop for English-speaking librarians and health care professionals to better assist Spanish-speaking patrons. The course, “No Comprende? Spanish Health Information Resources for English-Speaking Librarians,” will be held from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 15, in the J. Otto Lottes Health Sciences Library.  Siobhan Champ-Blackwell, community outreach liaison for the National Network and Libraries of Medicine, will serve as the instructor.

The hands-on class will teach basic, library, medical and Internet Spanish vocabulary. Participants will learn to evaluate and identify Spanish health Web sites they can recommend to patrons. The class will teach students to pronounce the letters in the Spanish alphabet, type Spanish characters such as accent marks and identify reliable online Spanish health information resources.   There is no cost to attend the class, but students must register. 4.  The Missouri State Library will sponsor two Bilingual Story Hours workshops focusing on the importance of outreach and community involvement when serving Latino populations. The workshop will provide participants with an opportunity to explore program development for the presentation of bilingual story hours with accompanying activities, bilingual outreach services and collaboration with community groups to provide the services. Emphasis will be on Spanish bilingual presentations. Fluency in Spanish is not required for participation in this workshop. Karen Drevo, Youth Services and Circulation Librarian from the Norfolk (NE) Public Library, is the workshop presenter. Workshops are scheduled for:

• December 4, 2006, Jefferson County Library – Northwest Branch, High Ridge
• December 5, 2006, Marshall Public Library, Marshall

The workshops are free to Missouri library personnel including school librarians. 8. The Allied Professional Association of the American Library Association (ALA-APA) annually sponsors National Library Workers Day April 17, 2007, which falls on the Tuesday of National Library Week. The purpose is to recognize all library workers, including librarians, support staff and others who make library service possible every day.
