CLARIFICATION of earlier email
-- The subject line of the HS time-sensitive message earlier this week confused some people. The words "time-sensitive" was specifically related to the message and do NOT have any connection to the time-sensitive Dewey areas of the collection report.

4. MASL Spring Conference -- Pre-Conference Sessions
The following Pre-Conference Classes will be offered in conjunction with the MASL 2007 Spring Conference. The classes are scheduled from 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 15, 2007. Cost is $30 per person and includes all required materials. To register for a class please go to the MASL website (http://maslonline.org) and follow the links to Spring Conference Registration.

1. Unleash YOUR Creativity....or discover that you have some to UNLEASH!
Is your budget tight? Are your creative juices drying up? Does your library have the blahs? Then this will be a fun workshop for you.
The format is hands-on, a make-it-and-take-it session. A no-sew method of making banners will be demonstrated and you will take home a banner that you will make during this class. Oodles of tips and ideas for sprucing up your library will be shared. If possible, bring lots of photos of your library and we’ll work on an LMC make-over or spruce-up!
Limited to 25 participants.
Instructor: Vickie Holyfield Howard - Librarian, Central Middle School, Cape Girardeau, Missouri
Vickie has presented numerous workshops for MASL, AASL, and IRA. She has also conducted many workshops in school districts throughout the U.S.

2. Unleash the POWER of Repair
DEMCO presents a practical, hands-on workshop where participants learn and practice basic repairs for both hard and softbound books. Emphasis is placed on becoming familiar with techniques and materials for economical in-house repairs. Additionally, protective measures, which will extend the life of new books, will be demonstrated and discussed. Long-term preservation of archival materials is not addressed.
This workshop is useful for anyone involved in repair of library materials. Participants will gain skills that can be shared with other staff or volunteers.
Repair kits are provided, but all participants need to bring scissors and one or two discarded hard-cover books approx ¾” to 1” thick. (The spine size is important for matching the products in the hands-on kit.)
Instructor: Deb Urschlitz - DEMCO Inc. North Territory Manager
Deb has 22 years of experience with DEMCO Inc. working directly with the school and public library market. She has spent 15 years in customer service. In addition to doing workshops on book repair, teen spaces, and signage, Ms Urschlitz works with school libraries on space planning, special pricing, product research, product selection, renovations, and special projects.

3. Explore Summer Reading Programs
The results of the Show Me the Connection study conducted by MASL and the State Library, 2002-2004, indicated that summer reading programs have a statistically significant impact on student achievement. This workshop will look at successful summer reading programs and provide ideas you can use to develop an effective summer reading program in your school.
Instructor: TBA
Additional information about the 2007 Spring Conference should be available on the website – SOON!

“Famous Missourians” Project Brings History to Life
The State Historical Society of Missouri has recently completed the first stage of an on-line educational resource for students of Missouri history. The electronic project, titled “Famous Missourians,” is available on the Society’s Web site at www.umsystem.edu/shs/famousmissourians . It was written and designed by educational writer Carlynn Trout in conjunction with Society staff.

The primary purpose of the project is to help fourth-grade students learn more about Missourians from various time periods who made important contributions in a variety of fields. This educational outreach project provides students with visually engaging biographies that include images and documents from the Society’s rich collection of artworks, photographs, maps, newspapers, rare books, and reference materials. It also includes images and documents from the Western Historical Manuscript Collection-Columbia. In addition, Missouri state historic sites and local historical societies have loaned digital images. “Famous Missourians,” which supports the Show-Me State Standards for social studies for fourth grade, provides teachers and students with a comprehensive overview of each subject.
This project has been generously supported by grants from the A. P. Green Foundation, the J. C. Penney Foundation, and the Richard S. Brownlee Fund. The ten biographies currently ready for use are Thomas Hart Benton, Susan Elizabeth Blow, Lucile Bluford, George Washington Carver, Samuel Clemens, A. P. Green, Marie Watkins Oliver, J. C. Penney, Sacred Sun, and Helen Stephens
