TEACHER NOTES:

This problem should be done without the use of a calculator.  Understanding the relationships of the expressions is more important than a particular answer.  The stem for the problem might be that “your calculator is broken…”  Students should also be allowed to investigate these relationships using both patterns and graphs (including use of graphing technologies and spreadsheets).  Students should be able to recognize how the order will change depending on the values of x under consideration.  This problem could be modified to identify a particular domain for x, such as 0<x<1.
