The Student’s Taxonomy of Resource-Based
Learning

NO INVOLVEMENT
The student is prevented from using or has no desire to use
the library media center materials and program.

SPONTANEOUS INVOLVEMENT
The student unexpectedly finds materials or activities of
interest in the library media center.
-
INFORMATION/MATERIALS/PRODUCATION ASSISTANCE
The student requests and obtains specific information,
materials, equipment, and production assistance for personal, recreational,
or curricular use.

DIRECTED MOTIVATION/PROGRAM
Students read, view, listen, produce, or perform
in response to a motivational campaign of the library media center staff
(not necessarily curricular related).

UTILIZATION SKILLS
The student learns basic skills needed to use the resources
of the library media center, other libraries, and community resources.

STRUCTURED INTERACTION
The student participates in planned activities designed to
carry out a curricular or recreational objective.

SELF-MOTIVATED USE
The student is self-motivated to retrieve, use, and create
materials/information in all forms of media both under the direction of and
independent of the library media center staff.

LIFE-LONG USE
Reliance on the library media program carries over after
schooling into intelligent use of media and information for personal,
educational, and recreational needs.
