New Model Curriculum Units Available for Educators
Missouri is taking its first steps towards offering comprehensive curriculum aligned with state and national standards with the release of new online model curriculum. The Department of Elementary and Secondary released model curriculum as a state-level resource for mathematics and English language arts educators in Missouri. The units available represent the first phase of the Department’s curriculum project with the ultimate goal of developing a curriculum in all content areas that align with state and national standards.
Cross Content Literacy Institute
The Missouri Writing Project, through a grant from DESE, is sponsoring the Spring 2013 Cross-Content Literacy Institute. This FREE professional development is a great opportunity for teachers of all grade levels and subjects to explore writing across contents.
Poetry Out Loud
Poetry Out Loud is a national recitation contest open to all high school students and conducted in all 50 states by the National Endowment for the Arts. Last year over 8,000 students and 268 teachers from Missouri schools participated. The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Missouri Arts Council have partnered to bring this program to Missouri.
Math and Science Initiatives for Educators and Students
The ExxonMobil Foundation, the primary philanthropic arm of the Exxon Mobil Corporation in the United States, provides support for math and science opportunities for educators and students. Information about specific programs, such as the Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy and the Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp for middle school students can be found at the link below.
Missouri Literacy-in-CTE
The Missouri Literacy-in-CTE model is not a curriculum, but a process that helps highlight and develop the literacy learning opportunities that typically occur in all content courses. To meet students' complex literacy goals, the Missouri Literacy-in-CTE program will provide intensive, collaborative, and on-going professional development for teachers, inclusive of all teachers delivering literacy lessons, including CTE, science, history and social studies. As reflective practitioners, teachers can best support students as their intentional reading and writing habits grow in complexity to be applied in various courses and settings. College Prep Certificates
The Department will no longer produce College Prep Certificates for dissemination. The change is a result of the expectation that all students will be “College and Career Ready,” and that the standards for successful entry into the workplace are the same as those required for successful entrance into a college or university. In addition, graduation requirements now closely reflect the credit standards that had been required for the certificate. Districts may continue to offer such recognitions locally if desired.
