FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT

Assess formatively through observation and discussion of propaganda techniques brought in by students.  Evaluate how much information came naturally from student presentations and how much had to be prompted through guided questions.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

1.         Show a clip of a commercial in another language and allow students to try to analyze the technique used and how successful it is in selling the product.  If a second language commercial is not available, show the commercial on mute.

Questions

for

Students

What is the product being marketed?

What techniques are being used?

How are they successful or unsuccessful?

What does the commercial use that allows us to figure these things out without knowing the language?

2.              The teacher sets up a new note-taking organizer on the board with the same headings as used yesterday.  Demonstrate again the commercial clip where student analysis was found to be the weakest on the note-taking graphic organizer.  Provide a sample note-taking graphic organizer.  Again model how to identify the technique, the success, and the enjoyment level on the commercials brought as homework assignments.

Suggestion

Show a new commercial rather than demonstrating the one from previous lesson.

Idea

Talk through the thinking process that identifies the technique and then evaluates how successful it would be for selling the product.

3.             Continue to ask guided questions as students volunteer to present what they have brought as samples of different propaganda techniques.

Idea

Students should be prepared to take a short assessment to see if they understand the four types of propaganda techniques.  There will be some multiple choice (selected response) and one open constructed response.  They should be prepared to describe a commercial or ad they have seen previously, identifying the propaganda technique(s) used, the effectiveness of the technique and level of enjoyment, supporting it with details from the commercial/ad.
