“Wow, Bill,” exclaimed Kelly, “you got a great tan over the weekend!”

“Thanks,” Bill replied. “I had a blast tubing on Current River. We floated all day Saturday and had our picnic lunch on a gravel bar.”

“What’s that?” Jill asked. “I’ve never heard of a gravel bar.”

“It’s like a beach,” Bill explained, “but instead of being made of sand, it’s made of gravel. These gravel beaches were formed just before the Great Depression after the Ozarks had been stripped of timber.”

“Aren’t there any trees there now?” Kelly asked.

“Oh, yes,” Bill said with a chuckle, “trees cover the hills now. My favorite is the Cornus florida.”

“What in the world?” Kelly began.

Bill chuckled. “It’s just the scientific name for dogwood.”

“A tan and a brain,” Kelly sighed. “You’re my hero!”
