LESSON THREE: Text Features of Fiction, Poetry, Drama: Story Matrix

                             

LESSON DESCRIPTION

Students perform a reader’s theatre script based on The Rough-Face Girl by Rafe Martin called The Hidden One. Students locate the text features in a matrix, along with the text features of The Sign of the Beaver by Elizabeth George Speare.

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT 

Students complete a Venn diagram that compares and contrast text features of The Rough-Faced Girl by Rafe Martin and David Shannon and The Hidden One.

 

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

 

1.        Review The Rough-Faced Girl by having students complete a story map outlining characters, setting, problem, five major events and the solution.

 

2.        Assign parts from The Hidden One: A Native American Legend to students. Student informally read through the script. Some of the students read The Hidden One: A Native American Legend aloud as a play, leading the students to discover, discuss and list the unique text features of drama.

 

Strategy

 

Text features of drama include stage directions, dialogue, title, role, acts, and production notes. Text features of fiction include illustrations, title, dialogue, and chapters.

 

3.        Complete the matrix. This allows students to compare and contrast text features of the literature read during this unit. During this lesson, students help fill in the columns for The Sign of the Beaver; The Rough-Faced Girl; and The Hidden One: A Native American Legend. In the next lesson, complete the poetry column.
