What types of things do we look for when we summarize?

  1. Show students how to use notes to make a summary. (Notes modeled in Lesson Four will be used.) Start and then students assist until completion of the summary using the notes.

Questions

for

Students

What would be our topic sentence?

How could this point be made into a sentence?

Do you understand how the points and sub-points make sentences?

  1. Students create another summary using the notes from their guided practice done in class during Lesson Four.  Students use a cooperative learning strategy where each person takes turns writing a sentence from the notes to complete the summary.  Writing will be completed on chart paper or chalkboard to post.  After presenting summary to the class, discuss to determine similarities and differences in the summaries.
