Summative Assessment

This unit deals with meeting challenges. A challenge you may face one day is tying a knot in a tie. If you are a female, you may have to wear a tie if you are working in a “fancy” restaurant. If you are male, you will probably be required to wear ties to formal occasions. Whether you are male or female, you may have to explain to a cousin, brother, friend, etc. how to tie a knot. Use the How to tie a tie handout.

Part I: Use yourself, a tie, and the pages of directions provided to learn to tie a Half-Windsor knot. It may take several attempts. When you are finished, show your teacher your accomplishment! (15 minute limit)

Part II: Pretend you receive a telephone call from a frantic cousin who needs to go to a wedding and has to wear a tie. He doesn’t know how to knot a tie. Your task is to try to explain to your cousin, as clearly as possible, how to make a Half-Windsor knot. Your cousins does not have access to the same pictures that you do, so you will have to determine the best way to explain the process using words only. Write your verbal explanation on paper.

Part III: Use the information provided to you from the handout to answer the following questions:

  1. What techniques are used to explain the process of tying a Half-Windsor knot?
  2. Are these techniques effective? Explain why or why not.
  3. Explain what additional information could be added to make the directions for tying a Half-Windsor Knot clearer and easier to follow.
  4. Explain the relationship between the techniques used to explain the process for typing a Half-Windsor Knot and a person’s ability to successfully complete the task.

Half Windsor Knot

The Half Windsor Knot, a modest version of the Windsor Knot, is a symmetrical and triangular tie knot that you can use with any dress shirt. It works best with somewhat wider ties made from light to medium fabrics.

To tie the Half Windsor Knot, select a tie of your choice and stand in front of a mirror. Then simply follow the steps below:

1) The wide end "W" should extend about 12 inches below the narrow end "N". Cross the wide end "W" over the narrow end "N".

2) Bring the wide end "W" around and behind the narrow end "N".

3) Bring the wide end "W" up.

4) Pull the wide end "W" through the loop.

5) Bring the wide end "W" around front, over the narrow end "N" from right to left.

6) Again, bring the wide end "W" up and through the loop.

7) Bring the wide end "W" down through the knot in front.

8) Using both hands, tighten the knot carefully and draw it up to the collar.

And there you are! Simply keep working on this necktie knot and be sure to practice a few times until you are really good at it.
