MEETING CHALLENGES

  7th grade
  two weeks - four lessons
  This unit focuses on meeting challenges using media and writing
  The unit consists of a series of sequenced lessons.  Each lesson begins with a listing of specific information including sources of literature, handouts, words to know, and formative assessments. Each lesson contains sequenced learning activities designed to provide scaffold instruction (building in previous knowledge) and practices to develop student mastery of skills.

 Students must be able to identify and explain viewpoints conveyed in various media.

 

 I2A    Student will identify and explain techniques used to convey messages in various media

 

 Students must be able to analyze and synthesize two or more messages conveyed in various media to explain techniques used.

 Develop vocabulary through text using root words, synonyms, antonyms, context clues, glossary, and dictionary skills.

 W3C     Student will write expository paragraphs (including compare/contrast and cause and effect) with supporting and concluding sentences.

 Students must be able to write multi-paragraph expository essays (including problem/solution) that contain a thesis statement, supporting details/examples (from a variety of sources) and evidence that readers’ concerns and arguments have been anticipated and addressed.

 

 Utilize strategies to self-question and correct, infer, predict and check using cueing systems (meaning, structure, visual) during reading and read aloud.

 

 W3C    Student will write multi-paragraph expository essays that include details, facts, and/or examples from a variety of sources.

Students must be able to write logical responses (to various types of articles, editorials, advertisements, news programs, editorials, and/or political cartoons) that include supporting evidence from text in order to convey a message to various audiences.

 

Identify important information in written text to complete a graphic organizers including: T-charts, Webs, and K-W-L charts.

W3C    Student will write responses to literature that show an understanding of theme and characters using details/examples from the text as support

Student must be able to give clear and concise oral multi-step directions to perform complex procedures and/or tasks

Identify main ideas and list details

L2B    Student will give clear and concise oral multi-step directions to complete a complex task.

Students must be able to read and follow multi-step directions to complete a complex task.

Identify intended messages through oral and visual media

R3D    Student will read and follow multi-step directions in order to complete a complex task.

Analyze messages conveyed through various media (videos, pictures, websites, artwork, plays, and/or news programs)
