Sally’s assignment for school is to bring in supplies for a friendship bracelet from the craft supply store. Once Sally arrives at the store, she needs to fine the needed supplies. Using the map of the store, tell her to find the supplies. Students write verbal directions on paper. Scoring guide provided.

1. In a large group, students discuss the importance of giving clear and concise oral multi-step directions.

2. Give a set of oral multi-step directions to a student. The student attempts to follow all the directions. The class discusses the problems that may occur if the student is unable to follow the directions exactly.

3. Give students a copy of Decipher It. Students take turns reading the directions to each other to fill in each blank. Once the blanks are filled in, they will know what Ralph Waldo Emerson thought was the secret of friendship. (Answer: the only way to have a friend is to be one).

Practice the alphabet to review the sequence of the letters. Directions for Decipher It should be sequential to be of optimum use. Ralph Waldo Emerson was an American poet of the 19th century. He is best known for his poems, essays, and philosophical statements. |
