Students are assessed throughout the lesson by observation and participation.

 

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

 

  1. Read aloud a book with examples of figurative language. Discuss examples and meaning. Students use the Figurative Language/ Sensory Details Chart graphic organizer to record the phrases.

 

  1. Orally discuss figurative language examples for students to explain their meanings.

 

  1. Using a pocket chart, display one figurative language phrase and three choices. Students choose the correct answer explaining the meaning of the phrase. Repeat this activity until five to ten phrases have been used.

  1. Create groups of three to four students. Give each group an envelope with ten figurative language phrases and meanings cut from the Figurative Language Examples handout. Each group will use a Figurative Language/Sensory Details Chart graphic organizer to glue each phrase in the appropriate column matching the meaning to the phrase. Groups will complete the Figurative Language and Sensory Details Chart graphic organizer by filling in the last column.
