FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT

Students finish reading the remainder of the book and complete the Anticipation Guide independently. They pick three to five underlined vocabulary words and write them in a complete sentence.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

  1. Introduce the book Strega Nona by using the Anticipation Guide. Students read through the statements given. If they think the statement is something that occurs in the story, they place a check in front of the statement (predicting and setting a purpose for reading).

Strategy

Anticipation Guides are also known as reaction guides. They are a form of graphic organizer, which help students use prior knowledge to predict what might happen in a story. They also serve to have students focus during reading to discover which of these statements are actually identified and/or supported by the text.

Questions

for

Students

Why do you think that would/would not happen in this story?

How can you justify your answer?

  1. If anticipation guides are new to your students, complete the “introductory” portion of this activity as a class, using consensus to determine whether to mark the blank in front of each statement.

  1. Read the first portion of the book with the students and determine whether or not statements one and two actually happened. If the statement is correct, place a check in the “after” blank on the Anticipation Guide. If the statement is incorrect, leave the “after” blank empty and rewrite the statement correctly on the lines below.
