(From “Marina Silva: Saving Amazonia’s Rain Forests from Heroes)

Marina Silva de Souza grew up deep in the rain forest of Brazil. From a young age, she knew her way along jungle paths, over streams, and through misty swamps. For her, the forests were not just some exotic tourist spot. They were home. Only later, after Marina grew up, did she realize her home was in danger. Unless someone did something to save the Brazilian rain forests, they would soon be ruined forever.

Marian and her family lived in a part of Brazil called Amazonia. Her family survived on the income her father earned collecting rubber from rubber trees, but it was barely enough to feed the family.

When her family did eat, their meals often consisted of rodents and other creatures that roamed the jungles. Marina herself began hunting and fishing at an early age, trying to bring in a little extra food for her family. Marina’s parents had 11 children, three of whom died as babies. As the oldest surviving child, Marina helped care for her sisters and brother. Also, she often went out into the forest and helped her father tap rubber trees.
