UNIT OVERVIEW

This unit consists of four lessons, followed by a summative assessment.  Each lesson lasts from 40 to 60 minutes.  Students identify intended messages conveyed through oral and visual media, write expository text with main idea and details, give two- and three-step oral directions to complete a simple task, and read and follow two- and three-step directions to complete a simple task.

 

UNIT PLAN

This unit consists of a series of lessons followed by a summative assessment.  For best results and to ensure mastery of the targeted learning objectives, it is suggested the unit be presented in the suggested order. Each lesson contains sequenced learning activities designed to provide scaffold instruction (building in previous knowledge) and practice to develop student mastery of skills. All lessons should be completed prior to administering the summative assessments. 

 

Lesson One

Identify intended media messages

§         Supplies:  Transparency of a magazine cover; Rivers and Streams poster; one teacher-chosen example of a media work such as a chart, cartoon, magazine cover, audio clip, etc., writing paper, pencils

§         Handouts: Rivers and Streams poster

§         Formative assessment:  provided

Lesson Two

Giving oral directions

§         Supplies:  posters; small bag of candy; sticky notes; pencils

§         Handouts:   Clear/Confusing T-chart

§         Formative assessment:  provided

Lesson Three

Following written directions

§         Supplies:  simple set of written directions for teacher to model 

§         Handouts:  Alphabetizing Directions and Making a Leaf Rubbing

§         Formative assessment:  provided

Lesson Four

Writing expository paragraph

§         Literature:  Arthur’s Pet Business by Marc Brown

§         Supplies:  overhead example of Pre-Writing graphic organizer, writing paper, pencils, dictionary

§         Handouts:  Writing Scoring Guide, Pre-Writing graphic organizer provided, examples of a well-written expository paragraph

§         Formative assessment:  Writing Scoring Guide provided
