Dear State Coordinators:
We realize that you are being asked to respond to many requests for information at this time. However, information to legislators and policy makers is our best, if only, tool to justify increased McKinney-Vento funding in the supplemental funding bills being taken up by Congress.
More specifically, we need your help in order to justify an adequate level of M-V support. If you could respond with ANY available information regarding the following, it would be very helpful to our efforts.
District Name: _______________________________________
Cty-Dist: ______________
Homeless Grant: Yes or No
1. Rough estimate of the number of school-age children displaced from Katrina entering your state
2. Rough estimate of pre-school children displaced from Katrina entering your state
3. Rough estimate of "pre-existing" homeless children that were already going unserved due to lack of funding
4. Number of school districts in your state that do not receive M-V subgrants that are significantly impacted by increased number of displaced students
5. Areas of greatest increased service need (funded and unfunded districts),
including:
- staffing
- initial assessment (informal) and class placement
- counseling
- transportation
- supplies
- meeting needs of preschool aged children
- expedited assessments for special education
- identifying students who have been displaced and are living doubled up
- tutoring
- sensitivity training/profession development
- list any others
6. The costs of providing McKinney-Vento services to these additional children (even if just a very rough estimate)
Please note that additional funding for school infrastructure and other needs are being addressed through other other funding streams.
Again, the legislation is moving quickly.
